Abstract
Imam Hasan ibn Ali (peace be upon him) holds a special place in Islamic heritage. He is one of the revered members of the Prophet’s household, as emphasized by the verse of purification: "Indeed, Allah desires to remove from you the impurity, O people of the [Prophet’s] household, and to purify you thoroughly" (Al-Ahzab: verse 33). He is the grandson of the noble Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), and both he and his brother, Imam Husayn (peace be upon him), are the leaders of the youth of Paradise. They are revered as Imams, whether they stand or sit, according to the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family). Moreover, Imam Hasan (peace be upon him) was the Caliph of the Muslims after the martyrdom of his father, Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), until the truce with Mu'awiya ibn Abi Sufyan. Imam Hasan (peace be upon him) has left behind a rich legacy that demands our attention and care due to the moral, educational, and humanitarian values it embodies.
These exemplary values are clearly evident to the observer and scholar through the sermons of Imam Hasan (peace be upon him), whether addressed to his followers or found in the letters exchanged before and after the truce with Mu'awiya. He never missed an opportunity to remind people of the virtues and merits of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), highlighting their usurped rights by their enemies. In this endeavor, he employed a powerful style in his language to counter the propaganda of the Umayyad regime, which sought to mislead and deceive people. In this fierce confrontation, Imam Hasan (peace be upon him) utilized literary and linguistic techniques, such as argumentative discourse, the strength of persuasion and warning, alongside the use of imagery, comparison, and repetition.
Based on this reality, this study aims to examine Imam Hasan’s sermons and his letters to Mu'awiya ibn Abi Sufyan through a thematic and literary lens, using a descriptive-analytical approach. The study focuses on a technical analysis of a collection of his sermons, letters, and short sayings, compiled by Sayyed Mustafa Al-Mousawi in his book. The study is divided into an introduction and two main sections.
